Mr. Burghart’s primary responsibilities include overseeing all legal matters for the firm, managing and directing outside legal counsel, working on regulatory and compliance matters, advising on international affairs, and supporting strategic direction for the firm. Mr. Burghart has more than 30 years of legal experience in mergers & acquisitions, international business, lending, commercial transactions, real estate, and corporate governance.

Prior to joining Madison in April 2007, Mr. Burghart was Vice-President – Business and Legal Affairs – at Republic Financial (Denver, CO), where he worked on the purchase and operation of companies in various industries, the acquisition and management of distressed debt, as well as investing as a senior and subordinated debtholder. In addition, he oversaw corporate governance and legal affairs for nine separate operating companies, including businesses involved in commercial roofing, health care, sales, staffing and manufacturing. During his 18-month stint at Republic, he was also able to reduce the number of lawsuits against a particular portfolio company from more than 300 to 25.

Prior to Republic Financial, Mr. Burghart was a Senior Attorney – Mergers and Acquisitions – for AT&T Broadband and MediaOne Group, Inc. Before that, he was a Partner and Chairman of the International Practice Group at the Colorado-based law firm of Holland & Hart for more than 10 years. Mr. Burghart earned a BA degree magna cum laude from Johns Hopkins University where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Sigma Alpha and earned his JD at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was Editor of the Law Review and a member of the Order of the Coif. He is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Pennsylvania.
